IOM Hosts Critical Session on Youth-Led Climate Adaptation Through Migration at LCOY Mysuru 2024
On August 16, 2024, The International Organization for Migration (IOM) hosted an insightful session titled “Young people as stakeholders in addressing climate change impacts using migration as an adaptation strategy, with contributions from Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO,) youth delegates and LCOY volunteers at the Local Conference of Youth held in Mysuru. This event was part of a broader four-day conference organized under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and four accredited youth-led organizations, bringing together young climate leaders from across India.
The session underscored the critical intersection between climate change and migration, exploring how migration can serve as a strategic adaptation response to the climate crisis. With millions in India already experiencing the devastating effects of extreme weather events, the importance of this dialogue cannot be overstated. IOM India emphasized the role of youth in driving solutions and advocated for gender-inclusive approaches to these challenges. To leverage the unique perspectives and positions of the youth, IOM India also invited young activists to amplify their voices during the session.
Key outcomes from the session included developing a nuanced understanding of the links between climate change and mobility, youth-led proposals for addressing these issues, and the integration of migration considerations into the National Child and Youth Statement. This statement, reflecting the voices of India’s children and youth, will play a crucial role in shaping the Regional and Global Youth Statements presented at COP29.
IOM India's participation at LCOY Mysuru 2024 highlights its commitment to empowering young people and ensuring that migration remains a key component of climate resilience strategies.
